Modern Eye is proud to be led by its esteemed founder, Dr. Amar Bhat, a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea specialist. Dr. Bhat’s journey in eye care is marked by exceptional academic achievements, pioneering contributions to ophthalmology, and a deep-rooted commitment to the community of Houston, his beloved hometown.

Education and Fellowship

Dr. Bhat’s illustrious academic journey began at The University of Texas at Austin, where his outstanding undergraduate accomplishments earned him a full-tuition scholarship to medical school. He pursued his medical degree at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, laying a strong foundation for his future in medicine.

Following his medical education, Dr. Bhat moved to Washington, DC and completed his internship at the Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center and an ophthalmology residency at The George Washington University. During residency, he served as chief resident and led a mission trip to help restore vision to underserved patients in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He then pursued a fellowship under world-renowned surgeons in corneal and refractive surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Expertise and Specializations

Dr. Bhat is adept in a wide array of advanced ophthalmic procedures, including LASIK, PRK, ICL, laser-assisted cataract surgery. He can also provide the full range of corneal surgery, from extensive full- and partial-thickness corneal transplants to minor corneal procedures in the clinic. His commitment to providing personalized and cutting-edge treatments has significantly improved the lives of many patients. He has been certified in all of the newest technologies for laser vision correction such as the Alcon WaveLight LASIK platform, the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens, and the Staar EVO-ICL.

A prolific researcher and author, Dr. Bhat has contributed extensively to peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters in ophthalmology. His work is nationally recognized and has earned him a place on prestigious Top Doctors lists. His dedication to advancing eye care reflects his commitment to his practice and his peers.

Community Engagement and Personal Interests

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Bhat has had the honor of serving the patients of Houston in his work for Cross Eye Centers and Houston Methodist Hospital. His passion for teaching medical led him to join the Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor and he also supervises students at a charity clinic. Dr. Bhat’s love for his city extends beyond healthcare – he is also a diehard Houston sports fan. He is passionate about traveling, cooking, and, most importantly, spending quality time with his beautiful wife and amazing son. These personal interests and his deep connection to his community are integral to who he is both as a physician and as a person.

Founding Modern Eye Clinic

Dr. Bhat founded Modern Eye Clinic in 2024 with a vision to create a center of excellence in ophthalmology that mirrors his high standards for patient care, technological advancement, and community service. Under his leadership, the clinic will become a beacon of hope for patients seeking the most advanced and compassionate eye care in the Houston area and beyond.

Dr. John Stokes is a highly esteemed retina specialist at Modern Eye, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our team. He completed his medical education at the prestigious University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he developed a strong foundation in medical sciences and a passion for ophthalmology.

Following medical school, Dr. Stokes pursued his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Here, he honed his clinical skills and gained extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of eye conditions. His commitment to excellence and patient care earned him recognition and respect among his peers.

To further specialize in retinal diseases and surgeries, Dr. Stokes completed a rigorous fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the esteemed Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois at Chicago. During this time, he trained under some of the leading experts in the field and acquired advanced surgical techniques and knowledge, solidifying his expertise in managing complex retinal disorders.

Dr. Stokes is dedicated to providing personalized and compassionate care to his patients, utilizing the latest advancements in retinal treatments and technologies. He is committed to improving the vision and quality of life for those affected by retinal conditions.

In his spare time, Dr. Stokes enjoys spending quality time with his family, cherishing the moments shared with his loved ones. His dedication to his family and patients alike exemplifies his caring and compassionate nature.
