Pterygium Surgery
A pterygium a non-cancerous growth of the conjunctiva (the clear, thin tissue that lays over the white part of the eye) that extends onto the cornea. These growths are often related to excessive exposure to sunlight and wind. Pterygium surgery improves the appearance of the eye but also relieves uncomfortable symptoms such as irritation, redness, and vision obstruction. The procedure involves removing the growth and placing a graft to prevent recurrence, leading to enhanced comfort and potentially improved vision.
Corneal transplantation, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace part of your cornea with corneal tissue from a donor. It’s performed to restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea. There are different types of corneal transplantation, including full-thickness (penetrating keratoplasty) and partial-thickness (lamellar keratoplasty), depending on the extent of corneal damage. This surgery is most commonly done for Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy, but may provide help for many conditions such as corneal scars and keratoconus.
Superficial keratectomy involves the removal of the outer layers of the cornea to treat surface corneal abnormalities, such as superficial corneal scars, dystrophies, or irregularities. This procedure can alleviate vision problems and discomfort associated with these conditions, leading to clearer vision and reduced symptoms. Superficial keratectomy is often performed with local anesthesia in an outpatient setting, allowing for a relatively quick recovery and improvement in vision quality.
