PRK in Houston

A safe, flap-free alternative to LASIK

Let's tackle some of the common questions about PRK, like "What's the difference between PRK and LASIK," "Is PRK safe," and "Why would I get PRK instead of LASIK?"

What is PRK?

PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a laser eye surgery designed to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the procedure removes the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) to reshape the underlying corneal tissue with an excimer laser, improving how light focuses on your retina.

This flap-free approach makes PRK an ideal choice for patients who:

  • Have thin corneas or irregular corneal shapes.
  • Are prone to dry eyes.
  • Engage in contact sports or activities where a corneal flap could be a risk.
  • Have specific corneal dystrophies that PRK can simultaneously treat.

How does PRK Work?

The PRK procedure is straightforward and typically takes about 15 minutes per eye. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Preparation: Your eye is numbed with anesthetic drops to ensure a comfortable experience.
  2. Epithelium Removal: The outermost layer of the cornea is gently removed to expose the underlying tissue.
  3. Laser Reshaping: A precise excimer laser reshapes the cornea to correct your specific vision issues.
  4. Healing Process: A protective contact lens is placed over the eye to aid healing as the epithelium regenerates over a few days.

Benefits of PRK over LASIK?

PRK offers several advantages, particularly for patients with unique eye conditions:

  • Flap-Free Procedure: No corneal flap means no risk of flap complications, making it safer for certain patients.
  • Suitable for Thin Corneas: PRK is an excellent option for individuals with corneas too thin for LASIK.
  • Long-Lasting Results: PRK provides permanent vision correction, with results comparable to LASIK.
  • Reduced Dry Eye Risk: The procedure is less likely to exacerbate dry eye symptoms, a common concern for many.

What's the downside of PRK then?

Recovery from PRK typically takes a bit longer than LASIK due to the time needed for the epithelium to regenerate. Here’s an overview of the recovery timeline:

  • Day 1-3: You may experience mild discomfort, light sensitivity, and blurry vision as your cornea heals.
  • Day 4-7: Vision gradually improves as the epithelium regenerates. Your protective contact lenses are removed during a follow-up visit.
  • Week 2 and Beyond: Vision continues to sharpen, with most patients achieving optimal results within 1-3 months.

To ensure a smooth recovery, follow Dr. Bhat’s post-operative instructions closely and attend all scheduled follow-up visits.

Is PRK safe?

Yes, it’s very safe! Complication rates are very low and usually treatable. In fact, PRK has classically been the preferred refractive surgery of choice in the US military due to its safety.

Will I need glasses again?

Most patients enjoy clear vision for many years after PRK. However, in the mid-to-late 40s, a natural age-related condition called presbyopia can make it harder to see up close, often requiring reading glasses. If you’re approaching this age, Dr. Bhat will discuss advanced options to help reduce your need for glasses and maintain your visual freedom as much as possible.

Does insurance cover PRK?

No. However, your insurance plan may provide some discount or reimbursement. Financing is available to make PRK available to as many people as possible! HSA and FSA funds can also be used to pay for PRK.

How long is the recovery?

Although most people experience some improvements in their vision the next day, PRK results typically get better over the course of 1-3 months! You’ll use eye drops for 1 week after the procedure and sleep with a shield to protect your eyes. We also recommend avoiding make-up for 1 week after the procedure.

Does PRK "wear off?"

You may have heard of regression. Fortunately, regression rates are now very low with the right screening protocols and modern diagnostic equipment. If any patient appears to be high risk for regression or other issues like keratoconus, Dr. Bhat will recommend an alternative treatment.

Would Dr. Bhat do PRK on a family member?

Yes! Although he has only performed LASIK on his family members to this point in time, both Dr. Bhat and his brother received PRK by their respective surgeons.

And yes, they both still see great!
